The Itasca Village Board on July 1 approved a cost-sharing program to assist property owners on the 1200 block of Inverness Lane in replacing a deteriorated privacy fence along Prospect Avenue.
Trustee Powers explained there are eight homes that share rear property lines with Prospect Avenue and that the existing fence—installed decades ago when the road had fewer lanes—has deteriorated. The county declined responsibility for replacement; the village has accepted a $25,000 county contribution previously earmarked for Usher Park and will reallocate those funds toward the fence project. The balance of installation costs will be shared between the village and participating homeowners, with each homeowner's share allocated by linear footage. Homeowners who decline a new fence will receive credit for the village portion that would have been applied to a new fence.
Board members discussed fence height options, noting an 8-foot fence would provide greater visual screening and that an 8-foot installation would require a variance from the plan commission. Trustee Leahy asked about noise mitigation differences between 6- and 8-foot fences; Trustee Daley said an 8-foot fence provides more visual screening and that acoustical engineers could provide more precise data but the village staff are not acousticians.
Trustees approved the cost-sharing program by roll call. Staff said they will contact the neighborhood to determine participation and will bring variance requests to the plan commission as needed.
