County staff outline government-operations climate action plan and public input sessions

County staff provided an update Aug. 19 on a climate action plan focused on Story County government operations. The county is working with EA Engineering, Science and Technology to inventory greenhouse gas emissions using 2020 as a baseline and to identify climate risks and strategies to reduce emissions and improve resilience through mid-century.
The presenter said the plan will assess county buildings, facilities, water and wastewater operations, vehicle fleets (including employee commutes) and nonfleet equipment such as construction and landscaping machinery. Staff emphasized the plan’s focus on internal operations rather than private businesses, landowners or households.
To gather public input, the county will run four sessions in September: in-person sessions on three Wednesdays in Colo and Roland, a virtual session, and a Saturday session at McFarland Park in partnership with EA Engineering. Staff will also hold internal staff input sessions before returning to the board with a draft climate action plan.
Direct quote: “One of the reasons we're doing this is to try and understand and reduce emissions from our own operations such as our buildings, vehicles, equipment, while ensuring public services remain reliable and efficient,” the presenter said. The board received the update; no action was required.
