ComEd infrastructure work for NTT and regional reliability to prompt roadwork; village warns of July 4 impacts

Village staff told trustees June 17 that ComEd will begin major reliability and substation work this summer related to the NTT site and to improve redundancy across the Elk Grove–Wood Dale–Itasca area, and that the timing will require substantial right-of-way and roadway work in 2025–27.
Administrative staff said ComEd’s work on the new Itasca substation (referred to in the meeting as the NTT substation) is behind schedule; the project was expected earlier in the year but ComEd now expects a May go-live date for the substation unless contractors accelerate work. Staff said they have asked ComEd about temporary or bridge power so that NTT might open before the new substation is fully energized given pre-sold business at the NTT site.
Staff described a larger reliability project that will ‘‘connect basically Elk Grove, out east a little bit, and then coming… to the Itasca Substation to enable a project going on in Wood Dale and provide some redundancy for 2 projects that are going on in Elk Grove Village.’’ The village said that work will require lane closures and underground infrastructure work on Arlington Heights Road, Prospect and Thorndale and other local routes and is expected to start this summer and continue intermittently into 2027.
The nut graf: the ComEd projects will involve major coordination across departments and with police for traffic control; staff said the expected construction schedule contributed to the decision not to hold the village fireworks event this year because construction will likely overlap with early July work on Thorndale/Prospect.
Staff asked for and received assurances that community development will lead permitting and coordination, and that the village will work with ComEd to communicate schedules to residents. The board was told staff will keep trustees informed as ComEd provides more detailed timing and public notifications.
