Village OKs bulk salt contract and increases budget for delayed truck to $225,000

Trustee Daley reported that Public Works recommended accepting the low bid from Compass Minerals for bulk rock salt at $70.79 per ton, a reduction of $3.11 per ton from last year. Daley said the village reduced its estimated tonnage for the coming season from 1,200 tons to 1,000 tons "because of the mild winters we've been experiencing" and that the village's budgeted amount of $80,000 could purchase up to 1,130 tons at that price and remain within budget.

He told trustees the vehicle had been ordered in 2023 but delivery was delayed about 18 months and that "the price increase is really in the price of the truck itself, not the upfit charge." Daley said the truck is waiting in Henderson and the board needed to approve the amendment "so we can actually purchase the truck so they can get the work done."
Board action: motions for both items were moved and seconded and approved by roll call. The salt contract term includes a minimum contract amount of 80% (800 tons) and the village noted it purchased 997 tons last year for reference.
Discussion and clarifications included storage capacity: Public Works staff indicated they have some capacity to store extra salt on site if needed. Trustees asked about historical usage and storage; staff said they maintain some on-site contingency bins in higher-demand years.
