Village approves contract with Paul Hastings LLP to continue Haymarket DOJ legal support
Summary

Trustee Patrick presented a proposal to enter into an agreement with Paul Hastings LLP at the May 20 meeting to continue outside legal support related to the U.S. Department of Justice’s investigation concerning Haymarket zoning matters.
Village staff said the village originally retained attorney Renato Mariotti in November 2022 while he was a partner at a different firm; Mariotti has since moved to Paul Hastings LLP and the proposed agreement would continue his services under the new firm. Trustees were told that the FY2026 budget includes $226,000 to cover legal and consulting expenses related to Haymarket that are not covered by the village’s insurance carrier.
After brief discussion the board voted to approve entering into the agreement with Paul Hastings LLP; staff said the arrangement is budgeted and limited to costs not handled by insurance.
