Resident urges stronger construction signage and permit parking after Springfield detours clog neighborhood

Summary
A Deerfield resident said construction detours around Hazel and Waukegan Road are pushing drivers into the Springfield neighborhood, causing blocking, overnight parking and safety concerns; staff agreed to follow up.
During the public comment period on June 2, resident Donna Osborne told trustees that construction detours on and near Hazel and Waukegan Road are diverting drivers onto Springfield Street and creating parking and access problems for West Side neighbors.
Osborne described multiple road‑closed signs that motorists ignore and said construction trucks and equipment sometimes block Hazel and Park avenues, leaving her and neighbors unsure whether they can access alleyways or park near home. “We are all parking on the street,” Osborne said, and the situation has forced residents to wait or to find alternate parking when contractors block access.
Osborne asked for measures such as resident permit parking and clearer signs that indicate “residents only.” She also complained that a neighbor was storing extra vehicles and a camper in a driveway, reducing available off‑street spaces. The mayor asked staff to continue working with Osborne to identify possible steps; staff agreed to follow up and meet with her.
No formal action was taken; the mayor and trustees said staff would continue outreach to see whether changes to signage, enforcement or temporary permit measures could reduce neighborhood disruption while major construction is underway.
