The Village of Deerfield Board of Trustees on June 2 approved an ordinance amending chapter 7 of the municipal code to regulate certain THC products, kratom and similar substances.
The ordinance bans the sale of some products (listed in the ordinance as THC 8/10 products, kratom and 7‑hydroxy mitragynine) and prohibits possession and use of those substances by anyone under 21. It restricts retail sales of packaged delta‑9 THC products to packaged liquor stores holding a class A license and licensed cannabis business establishments, requires clear labeling of total delta‑9 THC content, and mandates that non‑beverage delta‑9 products such as gummies be sold from behind a counter controlled by an employee.
Village staff recounted discussions on the issue at previous meetings and told trustees that the ordinance reflects changes sought during those sessions. After brief trustee comments and no substantive public opposition at the meeting, the board voted to adopt the ordinance. Roll call showed trustees Benton, Berg, Greenberg and Jacoby voting yes; the ordinance passed.
The ordinance will take effect per the timeline specified in the village code; staff said the village had been monitoring state and municipal actions on THC regulation before drafting the local amendment.
