The Village of Deerfield on July 21 approved a resolution to extend its membership in the Municipal Insurance Cooperative Agency (MICA), the municipal insurance pool that provides property, liability and workers'-compensation coverage to member towns, staff said.
Eric told trustees the pool, which the village joined in the mid-1980s, provides expertise and cost efficiencies and currently has about 20 municipal members. The pool's current term expires in April 2026; the resolution authorizes extending the pool term through 2038 and approving amended bylaws that change the withdrawal notice from one year to 120 days, a change Eric said reflects a statutory change.
Eric and trustees discussed the amendment and other member municipalities. Eric listed other MICA members as Des Plaines, Streamwood, Normal, Quincy and South Elgin and said, to his knowledge, no member had indicated it would opt out. The board approved the resolution on a roll-call vote.
Trustees and staff noted the shorter notice period gives the village greater flexibility to leave the pool if future conditions warrant; Eric said staff can provide a deeper briefing on pooling mechanics if trustees want further detail.
The resolution passed on a roll-call vote with unanimous yes votes from trustees present.
