The board formally recognized Sunnyside Elementary School as a 2025 California Distinguished School during its meeting.
Assistant Superintendent Jessica Morales (presenter) and district staff said the recognition is awarded through the California School Recognition Program for schools that demonstrate strong academic achievement, student engagement, positive school climate and progress in closing achievement gaps. Sunnyside Principal Aaron Sevia and members of the Sunnyside staff joined the board to receive the honor; Principal Sevia thanked his staff and said the award “belongs to all of them.”
Trustees offered congratulations and said they hoped practices from Sunnyside could inform district efforts to close achievement gaps at other schools.
