Select Board approves letter to mall owner, will press Act 250 commissioner to expedite demolition permit

The Rutland Town Select Board on Oct. 26 approved a letter to the owner of the former mall asking for improved site security and cooperation with local law enforcement, and instructed staff to request the Act 250 district commissioner expedite permit review for demolition.
Town Administrator Bill Sweet presented a draft letter the town had prepared about security concerns at the vacant mall property. During discussion Select Board members asked Sweet to add language asking the property owner to "cooperate with local law enforcement to facilitate prosecution when circumstances warrant"; Sweet said he would add that sentence and circulate the amended letter for signature. The board then voted to approve the amended letter unanimously.
Board members also discussed the demolition-permit review under Act 250. Sweet said the mall owner has responded to an earlier incomplete permit submission with additional materials, but the commission had not completed review. Several board members asked staff to contact the Act 250 commissioner to request expedited handling of the demolition permit so the unsafe structure can be removed. The board asked that the town copy the district commissioner on the letter to the property owner if appropriate.
The board recorded the motion to approve the letter as amended and directed staff to send it and to follow up with the Act 250 office about the permit status.
