Mike Rowe, Rutland Town recreation director, asked the Select Board on Oct. 26 to consider moving the annual Townwide Celebration from its current date to Sunday, Aug. 16, to ease lifeguard and volunteer scheduling and avoid conflicts with high-school and college sports.
Rowe said the pool and townwide events drew strong participation this year and that lifeguard staffing was strained late in the season when many student workers were unavailable. He told the board the pool recorded more than 10,500 visits this season and that several tiles along the pool edge were lost; he plans to contact Pat No Pools for an estimate on spring repairs.
Board members suggested Rowe bring the proposed date change and pros-and-cons to the recreation committee for a fuller discussion and formal recommendation. The board also discussed fireworks scheduling and public-safety concerns tied to Fourth of July events, noting parking and traffic enforcement challenges when crowds park on roadways.
Rowe said he will coordinate with the rec committee, the town's partner organizations and department heads, and present recommendations to the board. He also described upcoming community programming including Sunday evening live music at the pool in July and senior events, and briefed the board on the department's progress implementing background-check and fingerprint processes for coaches and volunteers.
