Rec director reports strong start to fall programs; pool losing tiles, contractor scheduled for spring repairs

Mike Rowe, town recreation director, told the Rutland Town Select Board on Sept. 9 that fall recreation programming has started successfully, the town's fingerprinting equipment for background checks is operational and that pool tiles began to come loose at the end of the season.
Rowe said the town kicked off K-1-2 soccer behind the school with about 45 children participating and that older age-group games (U10, grade 3 and 4) are being hosted on Saturdays at the Northwood fields; the Saturday schedule draws several hundred people when multiple games overlap. He said the town is planning a senior outing to Killington (possible dates Sept. 23 or Sept. 30) and the annual trick-or-treat-on-the-trail and Halloween activities in late October.
On operational matters, Rowe said the fingerprint machine is installed and staff are completing the approval hoops required by state background-check procedures; he said the town is "closer than we were two weeks ago" on completing approvals. For the pool, Rowe said tiles have been coming loose near the top of the pool toward the end of the season; he has contacted Patnaud (the local pool contractor) who will inspect and has placed the pool on a schedule for spring repairs. Rowe said he did not have a cost estimate at the meeting.
Board members asked about publicity and sign-up for senior programs; Rowe said he included a sign-up notice in the town's Circle newsletter. The board took no formal action but added the pool repair work to facilities maintenance follow-up.
