The Rutland Town Select Board on Oct. 26 authorized purchase of two laptop computers and vehicle docking stations for the police department at a quoted cost of $6,666, to be paid from the town's depreciation fund.
Police Chief Ed Dumas told the board the department needs replacement mobile laptops compatible with existing Gamber Johnson docking systems in its cruisers. He said the exact model previously used is no longer manufactured and that state-bid pricing produced the next-available model; the two laptops and associated docking hardware were quoted at about $6,666. Dumas said the cost would be taken from the department's depreciation fund rather than the operating budget.
After a motion and second, the board approved the purchase and directed staff to proceed with ordering the units and vehicle docks from the state bid vendor. Dumas said the department also received recent firearms and impaired-driver training for officers and that replacement hardware is expected to last several years.
The board recorded the purchase as a capital replacement using depreciation funds; the police department will coordinate installation of the docking stations and vehicle retrofits.
