Board sets trustee-area map schedule: Aug. 29 deadline, hearings Sept. 11 and Sept. 25 final vote

The East Side Union High School District Board of Trustees on Aug. 14 approved a calendar to convert to trustee-area elections and invited public map submissions ahead of required hearings.
Staff reminded the board that the district accepted a legal demand to proceed with trustee-area voting and successfully requested an extension that gives the district 180 days from its response; that timeline ends Oct. 5. Under the statutory process, the board must hold a series of public hearings: two initial informational hearings, two map‑making hearings, and a final decision hearing. At the last public meeting some participants requested an extra public hearing, and trustees agreed to add it.
The board adopted the following schedule: maps from the public must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 29 for posting; the board will hold an additional public hearing on Sept. 11 (during the regular board evening) to review posted maps; and the board will take final action on Sept. 25. Trustees asked staff to do targeted outreach, including to ethnic media and community groups, to ensure maps and hearings are broadly noticed.
A motion to approve the calendar passed 5–0. Staff noted that no map can be discussed unless it has been publicly posted at least seven days before the hearing at which it will be discussed.
