Board approves Leader in Me program for two middle schools using school-safety grant funds

The McDowell County Board of Education voted unanimously June 9 to adopt the Leader in Me program for West McDowell and East McDowell middle schools, using first-year funding already included in a state-approved school-safety grant.
Miss Hamby presented Leader in Me as an evidence-based school-improvement framework rooted in the 7 Habits curriculum, saying it supports leadership, attendance and social-emotional outcomes. "Leader in Me has proven to reduce absenteeism, improve teacher effectiveness, enhance student outcomes, and has an improvement on student mental health," Hamby said.
Board members asked about independent evaluations, marketing obligations and multi-year costs. Hamby and other staff said third-party research supports Leader in Me, the first-year subscription is covered by the current grant, and future years would require additional funds; staff are pursuing further grants and support from Leader in Me's grant-writing resources.
Action taken: Motion by Mr. Settles, seconded by Ms. Hamby, to approve using grant funds to implement the first year of Leader in Me at the two middle schools was approved unanimously.
What’s next: Staff will implement the program this year and pursue grant funding for year two and beyond; the district noted its superintendent group had studied the program and several districts in the region have adopted it.
