The Wiley Independent School District board formally recognized April 2025 as Month of the Military Child and heard a briefing on adopt-a-school activities led by Dyess Air Force Base liaisons.
Darcy Hodges, identified in the meeting as the school liaison at Dyess Air Force Base, introduced Master Sergeant Beasley and Airman First Class (A1C) Keon Wilson as base points of contact for the district's adopt-a-school program. Hodges said two base teams are assigned as points of contact at Wiley East Intermediate and Wiley East Elementary, and that 7th Logistics Readiness Squadron (7 LRS) has adopted Wiley West Elementary. Hodges and the service members described recent and planned activities: lunch visits, test-day encouragement, field-day support, an upcoming group trip to view military aircraft (B-1s and C-130s on May 13 as stated) and general volunteer support for school events.
The board read and adopted a proclamation (read by a trustee) recognizing the month; the proclamation text included district figures and statewide estimates read aloud (the proclamation text in the packet notes Wiley ISD serves over 1,100 military-connected students and referenced an approximate Texas total of 149,761 military-connected children). Superintendent Joey Lipe thanked military families for choosing the district and acknowledged the community partnership.
Why it matters: With roughly 20% of students identified as military-connected at some campuses, the adopt-a-school program and formal recognition aim to coordinate volunteer support and recognize the unique needs of military families, including deployment-related stresses. District staff said adopt-a-school activity provides both short-term event support and ongoing mentoring/engagement.
Next steps: Staff will continue to coordinate adopt-a-school schedules, volunteer onboarding and planned events; the board requested that campuses "wear purple" and observe activities associated with the Month of the Military Child.
