Wylie ISD board gets timeline update on multiple bond-funded projects; elementary steel due next week, VOAG delayed to June

Wylie Independent School District trustees received an update on bond-funded construction projects, including an expected steel delivery for the new elementary school next week and a continued delay of the vocational agriculture (VOAG) metal building until June.

The update matters because the projects are paid from the district’s bond program and affect school access and facility availability ahead of the 2025–26 school year. District staff said they are coordinating permitting and contractor schedules to keep the largest projects moving despite manufacturing delays.

District staff reported that insulated concrete formwork and foundation prep are underway at the elementary site and that underground utilities are largely complete. The district said steel deliveries are scheduled for next week and crews will begin vertical construction if weather permits. Work at the VOAG site is behind because the metal building manufacturer has pushed delivery; staff said the vendor is still targeting June for shipment.

The high school band hall addition, storm shelter/gym, locker-room and classroom expansion components were packaged together and advertised this week. District staff said the pre-proposal meeting is scheduled for May 28 and bids are due June 17; trustees will review bid evaluations at the July board meeting. Staff said they timed the bid calendar to avoid the July Fourth holiday.

CADCO is coordinating construction and permitting with the city, the presentation said, and the district plans to sequence the high school work so contractors already mobilized in town can take on multiple projects to improve pricing and scheduling. Intermediate school expansion design work by CADCO is expected to reach a submittal stage around August, after which the district will seek direction from the board about advertising.

Board members and staff also discussed summer renovations: West Intermediate will receive new flooring and paint; playground equipment has been delivered and will be installed over the summer; and HVAC control work will begin once equipment and school schedules allow. Paragon Sports’ field/track work is delayed by recent rain, though staff said the contractor does not expect major schedule impacts and plans electrochemical injections under the track before sodding the field.

Finally, trustees heard that parking-lot work around the high school was slowed by a needed regrade and drainage redesign to allow two lots to be tied together. Staff said they still expect to complete the utility (sewer) work and major site grading this summer so facilities are ready for fall, and that additional paving may be scheduled as a follow-on project to avoid paving areas that will be worked on by heavy construction equipment.

District staff said they will return with bid evaluations and contract recommendations at upcoming board meetings.
