McDowell board recognizes College Board honorees, NJROTC presents colors; CTE students attended NCDOT summit

Dr. Greer, the superintendent, and staff recognized students and student programs at the start of the meeting. “We're proud of the work to get our schools up and going, and we're and we're pleased with what we've seen,” Dr. Greer said as he introduced recognitions.
Ms. Whitman, a staff member who presented student awards, highlighted several McDowell High School students who received College Board National Recognition Program honors, including Kaylor Carpenter, Stephanie Alvarez Morales, Roby Franklin and Riley Warren. “These kids do everything and then some,” Whitman said as she described students’ extracurricular and academic achievements.
The board also welcomed an NJROTC color guard presentation at the meeting opening. During a later agenda report, the NJROTC instructor told the board the cadets recently placed second in Area 8 and walked away third overall at a civilian marksmanship program competition; the unit is aiming to improve in drill competition and qualify for the national Navy drill competition.
During the consent agenda discussion, the board chair noted the district had conducted an electronic poll vote on Aug. 27 to allow a McDowell High School CTE group to attend the North Carolina Department of Transportation summit in Raleigh on short notice. The chair said the students met Gov. Stein and the Transportation Secretary at the event. The board later ratified that electronic poll as part of the consent agenda.
