Residents urge council to press county to include CAC redevelopment ideas after GEICO’s planned move

Several residents urged the Friendship Heights Village Council to present the Community Advisory Committee’s sector-plan recommendations to Montgomery County planners after GEICO announced it will relocate and the property will be redeveloped.
Ken Niles, who identified himself as a resident and CAC participant, asked the council to accept the CAC proposal as a template for redevelopment of the GEICO site and encouraged the council to forward the CAC document to county planning staff. Evan Smith, a resident, suggested preserving the GEICO building as a library and art center if feasible.
Council members and the mayor emphasized the coming sector plan rewrite and said county planners will seek community input. The council expects county staff to lead the sector-plan process; Tara Margoly (county planning lead) was noted as scheduled to attend a village development committee meeting on March 27 to discuss timing and village recommendations.
Council members said the village must be prepared to present a coherent community position to the county and encouraged residents to run for council and participate in the sector-plan review process.
