Village staff told the Village Board on Aug. 20 that multiple sidewalk and pedestrian safety projects are underway and expected to coincide with the start of the school year.
Village managers reported that work on new sidewalks along Dundee Road — connecting Vernon Avenue to Greenwood on both sides of the road — is well underway and expected to be ready for the district’s school start. Officials also said the village will install several rapid rectangular flashing beacons (RRFBs) next week; while the beacons may not be fully operational for the first day of school, staff said they expect the devices to be in place during September.
Why it matters: District 35 students return to class on Tuesday, Aug. 26, prompting officials to urge drivers to slow down and watch for children walking and biking in school zones.
In addition, the board approved last month resurfacing of the Silverado Bridge; staff said that project is likely to begin in September and will require a temporary closure of the bridge during work. Officials did not provide a firm completion date and said residents would receive advance notice of the closure and detours.
Village staff reiterated routine calendar items: Village Hall will be closed Monday, Sept. 1; refuse collection schedules will shift that week (collections delayed by one day Monday and Tuesday) while landscape‑waste pickup remains unchanged.
The manager also highlighted other recent and upcoming public‑works activity: pedestrian crossing improvements tied to the village’s capital projects, continued construction season activity and ongoing coordination with school and public‑safety partners to maximize safety at pick‑up and drop‑off times.
Officials asked residents to drive cautiously through school zones and business districts and to watch for buses, bicyclists and pedestrians as students return to class.
