Groves cancels Nov. 4 general election after certification of unopposed candidates

The Groves City Council received certification that candidates for two seats in the Nov. 4, 2025 general election were unopposed and voted to cancel the election on Aug. 25, 2025. Staff reported that no candidates filed against the incumbents (the packet identified the affected seats as Ward 1 and Ward 3), so the council approved an order and an ordinance canceling the election as authorized by state law.
Staff said the city secretary (staff) had received the certifications for the unopposed candidates and that no additional action was required beyond the council's formal order and ordinance. The council passed the cancellation motion and then adopted the ordinance on the same night.
The council also recorded the vote for the cancellations during the Aug. 25 meeting; the motions passed with council approval.
What this means: the certified, unopposed candidates will be declared elected according to state procedures for uncontested municipal elections and no election will be held Nov. 4 for the canceled seats, staff said.
