Board adopts multiple policy revisions recommended by IASB; committee clarifies family support policies

Policy committee chair David Shepherd said the committee completed a five‑year review of board policies and reviewed additions including a policy on staff development programs, a home and hospital instruction policy and updates addressing access to electronic networks and artificial intelligence. "It's here. It's life," Shepherd said when describing the committee's approach to AI in student use and the need to develop enforceable guidance.
The committee also reviewed policies on student behavior and suspension procedures. The committee recommended allowing parents the option to bring a support person to suspension or expulsion hearings; that support is at the parent's expense, the committee report said. Members discussed a combined policy addressing students who are parents, expectant parents or victims of domestic violence and requested the district separate or clarify those sections; staff later confirmed they would separate those items and return a revised draft next month.
The board moved and approved a slate of first readings and then approved second reading and adoption of the recommended policies by roll call. The adopted changes were presented as recommended by IASB and as reviewed by the district policy committee.
