District 88 authorizes disposal of five inoperable school buses, plans phased replacement

DuPage High School District 88 voted to authorize the disposal of five inoperable school buses after a condition assessment showed major engine, electrical and transmission problems.
The administration presented the assessment by Cottage Hill operating company showing five buses—nos. 217, 218, 221, 222 and 227—with repair costs that would be substantial and an average age of 16 to 18 years. The district will remove those buses from service and proceed with disposal to free space for replacement vehicles, the administration said.
District staff said Cottage Hill requested additional parking space before accepting replacement vehicles; the district plans to phase in replacement buses over the next two years, starting in the current fiscal year. Officials also said the district has successfully donated retired buses in the past to area fire academies for training and has contacted such programs about taking the five vehicles.
"This will free up space at Cottage Hill to accommodate replacement buses," a district staff member said in the presentation. The board approved a motion authorizing administration to dispose of the five buses; the motion passed on a roll-call vote.
Administrators did not provide specific replacement vehicle models, unit prices or a fixed procurement timeline beyond stating replacements would begin this fiscal year. The board recorded the disposal authorization and instructed administration to proceed with disposal and make space for replacement vehicles.
