Provo board approves LEA-specific licenses for staff pending state certification

PROVO, Utah — The Provo City School Board on Aug. 26 approved Local Education Agency (LEA) specific licenses for district employees who are in the process of obtaining state certification, allowing them to serve in their assigned positions pending final licensure. Deputy Superintendent Jason Cox explained that an LEA-specific license lets the district employ an educator in a position for the year while that person completes certification requirements. Cox told the board that many applicants had submitted documentation to the state but the timing of approvals is tight and the state expects license approvals by Sept. 1; the LEA-specific license bridges that gap so staff can begin work. The motion to approve the LEA-specific licenses, moved by Meg Van Wagonen and seconded by Melanie Hall, passed unanimously. Board members framed the vote as an administrative authorization that ensures teachers and staff who are working toward certification may legally occupy their assigned roles as the state processes permanent licenses. No dollar amounts were tied to the LEA-specific license approvals during the meeting.
