District presents LEA-specific license list to board ahead of business meeting; state deadline moved to Sept. 1

PROVO, Utah — Deputy Superintendent Jason Cox outlined the district’s request for LEA-specific licenses Wednesday, telling the Provo City School Board most of the cases are routine or involve teachers who are close to meeting credential requirements. Cox said the list is small relative to district staffing, noting, “out of the 840 teachers that we have, there's not that many that we're asking you to approve tonight.” He said common reasons for the requests include teachers who recently moved into Utah from other states and interns whose university paperwork has not yet cleared. Cox also told the board that the state’s approval timeline for these local license approvals moved earlier this year from Oct. 15 to Sept. 1, which is why the district presented the list at the study session and will place it on the business agenda for formal approval. Board members asked clarifying questions about apparent concentration of LEA license requests at certain schools; Cox said distribution can vary year to year depending on hiring patterns. The board did not vote during the study session; the items are scheduled for the board’s business meeting later the same day.
