Student representative reports tighter phone rules at some Anchorage high schools, peers express frustration

Student representative Madison reported to the board that Anchorage School District and individual schools are tightening phone policies and that students are responding with mixed reactions.
"At Eagle River High School, we are now making it so all high schoolers at our school cannot have their phones out the entire day, and that includes passing periods and lunch, and the policy is in the locker stored away," Madison said. She also said South High School is reportedly limiting phone use in some ways while still allowing it during passing periods and lunch.
Madison said some peers described confusion and frustration about the changes, including difficulty coordinating with peers and concerns about contacting family in emergencies. She told the board she will continue to collect student feedback and report back.
The report was informational; no board action was taken. The student representative's remarks were offered during the student report section of the agenda and the board did not engage in discussion during that item.
Board members thanked Madison for the report and moved on to committee and monitoring items.
