The board received a first reading Tuesday of a minor update to the district’s Arizona State Seal of Arts Proficiency Program description: the addition of three career‑and‑technical education (CTE) courses — Film and TV 1, Film and TV 2 and Film and TV 3 — as qualifying credits.
Cheryl Castro said the district must submit an annual program description to the Arizona Department of Education to document how local requirements meet state guidance for awarding the State Seal of Arts Proficiency. Under the district framework, students at Catalina Foothills High School may earn the seal by meeting one of several credit pathways, submitting a capstone project and reflection, maintaining a final GPA of 3.0 or higher in qualifying courses, and documenting extracurricular arts activities.
Castro said the only substantive change for the district is the addition of the three Film and TV CTE courses; the update is intended to align the local program description with current course offerings and will be submitted to ADE. Board members asked about mentoring capacity and whether increased eligible courses could create more demand for teacher mentors; Castro said she would follow up with performing‑arts leadership to confirm capacity before the next reading.
The program description will be finalized and submitted to ADE after the second reading.
