The Conroe ISD SHAC voted to authorize the Physical Activity and Fitness subcommittee to develop a survey for principals and campus staff about implementation of required physical education minutes and the quality of PE instruction.
Subcommittee members said the focus is campuses that provide 30 minutes of daily physical education, where staff raised concerns about transition time, supervision of large groups, and whether an instructional 30-minute block results in meaningful active time once transitions and setup are counted. A subcommittee member explained the group intends to ask principals and teachers about both the quantity and quality of the scheduled time and to request board approval to distribute the survey.
A motion to prepare the survey and seek board approval passed by show of hands with no nays or abstentions. The subcommittee stated its aim is to analyze responses and, if possible, bring a recommendation to the full SHAC at the June meeting.
The subcommittee also said it had consulted district staff (including a meeting with district staffer Mr. Haymark) to clarify data and context for the survey.
The presentation reiterated that state practice currently expects daily physical education time; presenters described a 30-minute-per-day implementation at some campuses and said the survey would focus on obtaining principals’ and staffers’ perceptions of whether that block yields adequate active instruction time.
