SHAC approves October minutes, clarifies vote to use CATCH curriculum while omitting suicide slide

The Conroe Independent School District School Health Advisory Council voted to approve the minutes from its October meeting and asked that the minutes be amended to record what the group actually approved concerning curriculum content.
At the start of the meeting Mark Merle, Conroe ISD executive director of operations, asked for a motion to approve the October minutes. Christina Davis moved to approve and Jennifer Blackman seconded; the roll-call vote recorded multiple approvals, several abstentions and no recorded no votes. The council agreed the minutes should be revised to clarify the prior motion related to House Bill 3908 (Tucker's Law) and the district'adopted CATCH curriculum.
The amendment reflects that the council approved use of the CATCH curriculum for the opioid-use unit but directed counselors to omit displaying slide 8 (the suicide slide) and to use the district'approved alternative resource for sixth grade. Merle said the district could not remove the slide from the vendor'provided product but instructed counselors to skip it during presentations: "because it is a bought curriculum, we could not remove the slide. The instructions were given to the counselors ' to not show that slide, to skip over that slide and go directly on." The group agreed that language should be added to the minutes to show what was approved.
The council noted the distinction between approving curriculum materials and endorsing the full text of a purchased product: the committee approved implementation with a local omission and substitution, not a vendor-level deletion. The amended wording will be added to the October meeting minutes for the official record.
