The Conroe Independent School District board of trustees voted 7-0 Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2025, to name Dr. David Vinson the lone finalist for the district's superintendent post, the board announced at a special meeting held and duly posted under the Texas Open Meetings Act (Texas Government Code, chapter 551). Board President (speaker 1) called for the vote after a motion and second; the board approved the nomination by an uplift of hands.
The nomination begins a statutorily required waiting period during which the community, staff and stakeholders may review the finalist. "As required by Texas law, the board must wait at least 21 days before taking final action on the superintendent's contract," Board President (speaker 1) said at the meeting.
Board discussion focused on Vinson's record and the district's goals. A trustee (speaker 3) summarized community input gathered during the search: "From the 5,300 surveys submitted to candid cabinet feedback and multiple community forums across the feeders, there are some consistent trends," the trustee said, adding that the district sought a leader who can "build trust and unify, be visible and fair, manage growth, communicate well, retain and support our teachers, balance fiscal resources well, and manage new initiatives like curricular rollouts." The trustee recommended Vinson, saying he has about 20 years of experience in K-12 leadership and that he "encompasses" the traits the district prioritized.
Trustees cited Vinson's tenure at Wylie ISD. The trustee (speaker 3) said Vinson spent 15 years in leadership there and credited Wylie with improving academic ratings and finances: "This district was on academic probation when he started and is now the only district, to my knowledge, across the entire state to have all A's in all 20 campuses," the trustee said. The trustee also stated financial figures: Vinson's leadership reportedly boosted Wylie's unrestricted fund balance from $9,000,000 to $78,000,000 over a decade and moved teacher pay from the bottom three to the top 25 percent in the region; those figures were presented to justify the recommendation.
Trustees also thanked Interim Superintendent Dr. Landry for leading the district through the transition. "Dr. Landry, you delivered," Board President (speaker 1) said, calling Landry an "outstanding interim superintendent."
After the vote, Dr. David Vinson addressed the board and audience. He described his family's decision-making process and invoked his faith: "I really believe that God has his hand on this decision and on Conroe Independent School District," Vinson said. He said he and his wife are committed to the community and that he looks forward to working with Conroe ISD staff and trustees.
Formal next steps are limited by state law: the board must wait at least 21 days before taking final action on the superintendent's contract, a timeframe the board noted as an opportunity for public review. The meeting adjourned at 7:16 p.m.
Meeting details: the special meeting opened at 7:00 p.m., was posted in accordance with Texas Government Code, chapter 551, included trustee remarks and brief comments by a remote trustee (speaker 5), and lasted roughly 16 minutes.
