The Hunterdon County Board of County Commissioners voted Aug. 5 to award a 24‑month electricity generation supply contract to WGL Energy Services after a competitive auction earlier that day. The award follows a procurement process run under county bid 2025‑8.
County energy consultant Vicky Malloy of Concord Energies told the board the auction produced prices lower than the local utility’s tariff for both general service and lighting accounts and that an optional 5 percent enhanced renewable energy add‑on was available for participating municipalities.
“The premium was very, very insignificant,” Malloy said, describing the renewable option as voluntary for municipalities seeking sustainable‑energy points.
Malloy and county staff said the cooperative attracted five new municipal participants this year — Reddington, Lebanon Borough, Lebanon Township, Stockton and Glen Gardner — and projected about 25 percent savings across the cooperative. The county estimated savings of roughly $240,000 annually (about $480,000 over the 24‑month term); organizers estimated total cooperative savings of about $810,000 over the contract term, or about $400,000 per year for the participating members overall.
The motion to accept the bid passed on a roll‑call vote. Commissioners voting yes included Commissioner Rich, Commissioner Cool and other commissioners recorded by roll call when the item was taken up.
The contract award was presented as part of the board’s consent agenda and will be memorialized in the county contract files under county bid 2025‑8. Concord Energies will continue to work with participating municipalities that opt for the renewable add‑on or other account choices.
Documents submitted with the agenda list WGL Energy Services as the recommended vendor and identify the bid grouping (general service and lighting) and the voluntary renewable adder; the board did not adopt any additional conditions at the meeting.
The board did not specify an exact start date in the public discussion; the award covers a 24‑month supply term as stated in the procurement materials.
