The Arlington ISD board opened Thursday's meeting with honors and recognitions, celebrating a trustee, the district's visual-arts program and five students who advanced as National Math Stars finalists.
Trustee recognition: Trustees and a Leadership TASB representative honored Trustee Melody Fowler for completing the Leadership TASB program and earning the "master trustee" designation. Dr. Marilyn Tolbert, speaking for the Leadership TASB alumni association, described the program as a yearlong, statewide leadership curriculum and presented a diploma. Trustee Fowler said she hoped to bring lessons learned back to Arlington ISD and encouraged other trustees to apply.
Arts recognition: The board next recognized the district's visual-arts program for earning the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) District of Distinction Award, placing Arlington ISD among the top 8 percent of districts in the state under TAEA's rubric. Linh Nguyen, assistant director of fine arts, and district leaders credited teachers and community support for the distinction.
Student recognition: The board honored five students named National Math Stars finalists from Arlington ISD: Daniel de la Higuera Garcia (Wood Elementary), Alex Valdez (Duff Elementary), Alice Wynne (Farrell Elementary), Ryan Winn (Percy STEM Academy) and Isaac Benson (Little Elementary). Keith Hartle, the National Math Stars coordinator, explained the selection process and said roughly 4,500 Texas applicants were narrowed to 200 finalists; the top 50 statewide will be selected in mid-August.
Context and next steps: The recognitions were ceremonial; trustees recessed afterward to take photos with honorees. District leaders said the recognitions highlight student achievement and program excellence and are part of the board's planned honors and recognitions process.
