Julie Persons, Johnson County auditor, told supervisors Aug. 27 that the temporary county redistricting commission submitted a precincting worksheet and that staff intend to transmit the worksheet and precinct shape files to the Iowa Secretary of State for formal consideration.
Persons said the commission held a public hearing—no members of the public attended—but the worksheet reflects minor adjustments that move six people among precincts because of property incorporations and other boundary changes. She told the Board the county is still bound to 2020 census numbers and that the Secretary of State and Legislative Services Agency will draw final maps once the worksheet is received.
Board members noted Senate File 75 sets an end-of-calendar-year timeline for map drawing and pointed to Dec. 31, 2025 as the statutory deadline. Supervisors expressed appreciation for the commission’s and auditor’s staff work, and one supervisor said Johnson County's 2030 redistricting will be larger because of population shifts since 2020.
Why it matters: transmitting a completed worksheet and shape files is a required step in Iowa’s post‑census redistricting process; the LSA will prepare district maps and the county will follow subsequent steps depending on state timing.
What’s next: staff said they will transmit the worksheet and shape files to the Secretary of State tomorrow for formal consideration and await the LSA map-drawing timeline.
