District 26 board approves classroom hire at advanced salary step despite member’s objection

The District 26 Board of Education approved employment item 7.6 at its June 30 meeting. The motion to approve passed with six votes in favor and one opposed: Dee Darling, Bridget Sandlin, Stacy Salt, Catherine Potter, Jason Jancic and Mindy Hartman voted yes; Julie Jetty voted no.
Board Member Julie Jetty raised the item for discussion before the vote, saying she had reviewed the candidate materials and objected to placing a classroom hire on the higher salary schedule step reserved for advanced degrees when the position is nonsupervisory. Jetty said, "I feel that we are paying for a third degree that we are not going to use." She added that she would be less opposed if the district had "a plan and measurables to use that extra degree."
The board moved to approve the employment item after discussion. The meeting record does not show a recorded mover or seconder for the employment motion in the open transcript; the verbal motion is recorded as "So moved. Second." The board approved the employment item and the motion carried.
The discussion distinguished the board’s concern about budget and salary schedule placement from any suggestion that the hire was inappropriate for classroom duties: Jetty’s remarks focused on compensation and the absence of an articulated plan for leveraging the higher credential in that role.
