Several students were recognized for national competitive success and the board approved out‑of‑state travel for the speech and debate team. A district speaker said two students — Mackenzie Jones and Miriam Hafeez — qualified for the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions in Liberty, Missouri; the speaker said Mackenzie placed third out of 297 champions and earned a $250 scholarship. The speaker also said two students, Edward Wilson and Charlie Cosbam, qualified for national tournaments in Des Moines, Iowa, where more than 1,200 schools and nearly 6,000 competitors attended. After recognition, the board approved out-of-state travel for the speech and debate team. The presenter said Dec. 1 is a guaranteed travel date and the second and third dates depend on student qualifications. A motion to approve the out-of-state travel was made and seconded and carried with board members voting yes. The presenter thanked coaches and noted that the district will support qualified students’ travel to national events.
