Board recognizes HOSA and SkillsUSA state and national finalists from McKinley County schools

The Gallup-McKinley County Schools Board of Education recognized students on Thursday for awards won at state and national career-technical competitions, highlighting the districts push to prepare students for careers as well as graduation.
Kendi Keeler, director of college, career and civic readiness, introduced the students and advisers. She told the board Sofia Garcia, a senior at McKinley Academy, was a national finalist in phlebotomy at the HOSA International Leadership Conference in Nashville. Keeler credited Maria Celia Rivera as Garcias advisor.
Keeler also recognized SkillsUSA state medalists from the Opportunity to Career Center and Gallup Central: Travis Williams, who won a silver medal in cabinet making, and Tyler Garcia, who won a bronze medal in electrical wiring. Keeler thanked adviser Jimmy Carl for helping prepare students for the competitions.
Vice President Charles Long and other board members congratulated the students and their families, and the district provided cupcakes to celebrate. The board said the awards reflect district goals to develop creativity, critical thinking, responsibility and career skills.
What happens next: the board and staff will continue to highlight student career-technical achievements and to promote programs that give students workplace-aligned skills.
