Gallup-McKinley City Schools on Monday recognized dozens of students who placed in state and national career-technical and STEM competitions, with district staff saying 32 students will head to national contests this year.
The board ceremony honored winners across multiple career technical student organizations (CTSOs) — including HOSA (Future Health Professionals), Business Professionals of America (BPA), SkillsUSA and the Technology Student Association (TSA) — plus entries in the New Mexico Governor’s STEM Challenge, New Mexico Film Prize Junior, Samsung Solved for Tomorrow and the Envirothon.
Kendi Keeler, coordinator for college, career and civic readiness, told the board: “We do appreciate you. We’re here to celebrate our students. Today, we recognize students that have excelled in our career technical student organizations or CTSOs including HOSA, BPA, SkillsUSA, TSA.” The staff named individual medalists and finalists from schools including Crown Point, McKinley Academy, Gallup High, Tohatchi and others.
Superintendent Hyatt noted the increase in students advancing to national events: “So it’s tripled since last year.” The district said 32 students will attend national-level competitions; last year the district estimated roughly 10 students qualified for nationals.
The recognitions highlighted a range of disciplines: health sciences (HOSA winners included medical spelling and patient-care events), business and technology (BPA awards in accounting, word processing, spreadsheets and marketing), trade and technical skills (SkillsUSA awards in culinary arts, welding and carpentry), and creative competitions (film and video production honors and the Film Prize Junior "Founders Circle" award).
Other district recognitions included a McKinley Academy team acknowledged in the Governor’s STEM Challenge for projects done with industry partners, and a Tohatchi High School team named a state finalist in Samsung’s Solved for Tomorrow STEM competition.
The board and district staff thanked advisers and family members who supported students’ travel to statewide and national contests, and encouraged continued participation in school CTSO programs. The presentation included a district note that photos from the recognition were posted to the district’s new website and social channels during the meeting.
The recognitions took place in the regular board meeting before the board handled routine procedural items and new business.
