District recommends Twig, McGraw Hill and Pearson materials in science textbook adoption
Summary
After a local review and teacher input, the district recommended Twig for K–6, McGraw Hill for grades 7–8 (integrated science), and Pearson/AP‑focused materials (Learning) for grades 9–12; the board was asked to approve the selection so the district can move to implementation and summer professional development.
District instructional coordinators presented the science textbook adoption process and recommended publisher selections for approval.
Roxanne Lee (secondary instructional coordinator) and the elementary coordinator explained a five‑phase adoption cycle: preparation, state adoption review, local teacher review and piloting, vendor confirmation, and implementation including pacing and professional development. Reviewers evaluated five publishers that submitted materials to PED: Twig Science & Learning, HMH, McGraw Hill, STEMscopes and Savas Learning.
Teacher reviewers and principals across Kirtland, Shiprock and Newcomb participated in a district "road show" to examine materials. The elementary reviewers recommended Twig Science for K–6 because it scored highly on HQIM criteria and embedded CLRI (Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Instruction) elements teachers valued. Coordinators noted Twig's explicit CLRI elements and relevance for the district's Native American and Hispanic student populations.
For grades 7–8 the recommendation was McGraw Hill integrated science; for grades 9–12 the recommendation was "Learning" materials (Pearson/AP alignment) because department heads prioritized AP course strength and alignment for upper grades.
Staff asked the board to approve the adoption so the district can order materials, schedule back‑to‑school professional development, finalize pacing guides and begin distribution. The presentation concluded with implementation steps and an invitation for board members to request sample copies before final consent approval.
