Newcomb coach seeks board approval for weekend tournament, board reviews process for out‑of‑school fundraisers

Patrick Boone, the Newcomb High School boys’ basketball coach, asked the board to approve fundraising activities intended to support summer travel, meal and lodging costs for student athletes.

Boone said the fundraiser will include a coed volleyball tournament and food sales. During his presentation he said the events will be community events drawing teams from surrounding areas and will take place on weekend dates at school facilities; the paperwork initially marked the event as an out‑of‑school fundraiser and the coach said that was an error for the form but that the event will be held at the school on a Saturday.

Rodney Armenta was named as the operations contact for facilities, and assistant superintendent Deswood (spelled in materials as Deswood/Desblitt) explained that school organizations using district facilities for weekend events typically do not pay facility fees. Deswood said out‑of‑school fundraisers must be approved by the board and must follow district cash‑handling and finance policies.

Board members asked whether security would be present; Deswood said principals and athletic directors often request Navajo Nation Police or district contract security and that a request for security can be included. The item was discussed and clarified but the board did not record a formal vote during the work session; the item will follow the district’s standard approval process for out‑of‑school fundraisers.
