The Hibbing City Council on May 7 approved an agreement with BNSF Railway to reconstruct the rail crossing north of Howard Street on First Avenue, with the city’s share estimated at about $80,000 for the crossing itself and roughly $20,000 for approach paving and striping.
City Engineer Jesse Storey presented the proposal and said the city budgeted $100,000 for the project. “The city's cost would be half the cost of the rail crossing, which is about $80,000. And then the approach ... and striping plan which is roughly $20,000,” Storey said. Councilors approved the agreement by voice vote.
Council discussion confirmed the crossing is one of several in the city; staff said that Third Avenue was completed previously and that two crossings on Rainey Road remain to be done. A councilor asked whether an old wooden crossing by Turner Storage would be included; staff said that crossing counts among the city crossings and that a MnDOT corridor study could present an opportune time to coordinate reconstruction.
The council’s action authorizes the city’s participation in the cost share and moves the crossing reconstruction into the city’s capital schedule subject to coordination with BNSF and any related corridor studies.
