Commissioners on Aug. 28 received an update from Queen City Korfball, a youth sports program supported by the county’s Inspire Youth Initiative grant.
Kyle Reiser, board president of Queen City Korfball, described the sport as a coed Dutch version of basketball without dribbling and said the group leverages a life-skills curriculum alongside play. Reiser said about 200 recurring youth participated last school year across more than 10 sites (schools, Cincinnati Recreation Commission centers and independent rec centers), and the program ran Friday-night and weekend sessions to reach students during out-of-school hours.
Reiser credited the county grant for flexible funding that paid for food and uniforms that help bring kids to programming. He said five students from the West End will travel to the Netherlands for spring training with international partners and that the program hopes the experience broadens participants’ horizons. Commissioners praised the coed approach and the use of sports programming for interpersonal skill-building; the board thanked staff who administer the Inspire grants.
