Committee grants exception for 84-square-foot educational greenhouse at Family Services on Spirit Way
Summary
The Site Plan Review Committee approved an exception to allow an 84-square-foot greenhouse outside the rear yard at 3430 Spirit Way so Family Services of Northeast Wisconsin can collect roof runoff into a rain barrel for irrigation; the greenhouse will be donated by the School District of West De Pere and staff said no conditions were required.

The Village of Ashwaubenon Site Plan Review Committee on May 20 approved a site-plan exception allowing Family Services of Northeast Wisconsin to place an 84-square-foot greenhouse at 3430 Spirit Way outside the property’s rear yard.
Aaron, a Village staff member, said the greenhouse — proposed at roughly 12 by 7 feet (about 84 square feet) — would sit roughly 200 feet from Spirit Way near an existing garage and trees. The location was requested so the facility can collect roof runoff into a rain barrel behind the garage for irrigation of the greenhouse. "The requested location is to accommodate water... for the greenhouse, through a rain barrel that would use the runoff from the roof of the garage," Aaron said.
Aaron said the greenhouse was being donated by the School District of West De Pere and that the site is not in a residential frontage where an exception would set an unwanted precedent; committee members discussed aesthetics and location and said the greenhouse is well set back from the road and located in a commercial area.
A motion to approve the site-plan exception carried on a voice vote; staff indicated there were no special conditions attached to this approval.
Family Services did not appear to have a representative at the meeting; staff said they had discussed the request with the organization and that the greenhouse will be used for educational purposes by residents of the facility.
