Superintendent Doctor Gatto told the board Aug. 26 that the Wish for Wheels nonprofit and volunteers assembled and gave a brand-new bike to every second grader at Sherwood Elementary, and provided helmets and quality-control checks.

"They also supported students at Hodgkin's Leadership Academy and Harris Park Elementary," Doctor Gatto said, noting the organization has donated nearly 100,000 bikes nationally since its founding more than 20 years ago. He attended the event and described volunteer activities that combined team-building and safety checks.

The district did not propose an action related to the event at the meeting; the report was presented as part of the superintendent's regular update.
