Westminster High cross-country to host annual 9/11 stair-climb fundraiser for fallen firefighters

WESTMINSTER, Colo. — Westminster High School’s cross-country coaches asked the Board of Education on Sept. 9 to help publicize the school’s annual 9/11 stair-climb fundraiser, scheduled for Thursday on the high school stairs to honor lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and raise money for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
Linnea Martinez, head cross-country coach, and Matthew (Matt) Gillette, assistant coach, described the event and logistics. Martinez told the board: "The event does take place from 04:15 to 6PM. We will be meeting at the big staircase, like, right in front of the lockers, at 04:15 to get everybody registered and signed up." Gillette framed the event’s purpose: "...to commemorate the events of 9/11 and the you know, just everything that comes along with it... we have our Westminster firefighters out there to help support us during our event." Steve Saunders introduced the presentation before the coaches spoke.
Event details and fees: individual registration is $5; a team entry (up to four people) is $25. Proceeds are donated to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, not the team. The coaches said the challenge is 42 trips up and down the staircase; they reported each lap is 53 steps, which they estimated totals roughly 2,071 steps to match the number of stairs inside the World Trade Center.
Other logistics and community elements: the Westminster Fire Department will attend, offering a post-event fire truck tour and demonstrations. The coaches said there is still time to register at wps.org/stairs and that the district’s Westminster High School cross-country page on the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation site also accepts donations. Distinguishing discussion vs. decision: the presentation was a recognition and community announcement; the board did not take formal action. Several board members praised the student participation growth: the coaches said the team grew from five runners in their first season to 32 this year.
