Mayor says court upheld DNR permit for Saint John's Pier; city to seek more public input before budgeting

The City of Delafield's mayor reported on Feb. 17 that a court upheld the Department of Natural Resources permit tied to the proposed Saint John's Pier, and said the city will solicit additional public input and review cost estimates before deciding whether to proceed.
Mayor Eicher told the council the judge found the DNR permit legitimate and made recommendations the city should consider if it moves forward. "The riparian rights of the city were upheld by the judge's ruling," Eicher said, summarizing the court outcome.
Eicher said the project would return to committee agendas — specifically Park & Recreation and Lake Welfare — for more public review of operations, hours and management before any final decision. He also said the city would not pursue construction this year because the project had been tied to DNR matching funds and the timing would not support expenditure in the current budget cycle. Staff will prepare current cost estimates and the mayor said he expected a budget-item discussion later in the year.
The mayor framed the Feb. 17 remarks as an update rather than a decision. "I'm gonna look have the staff look at what current cost would be and just bring this back as a budget item by the end of the year," he said.
Ending: The mayor said the city intends to provide multiple opportunities for public comment and that any future appearance of the project on council agendas will include the additional committee reviews and cost information.
