Delafield debates whether wake-boat guidelines should remain voluntary or become enforceable rules

Delafield — Council members on June 16 asked the Lake Welfare Committee to monitor compliance with the city’s voluntary wake-boat safety guidelines and to explore drafting enforceable rules if voluntary measures fail to reduce conflicts.
Alderman Schaffer introduced the item and said the volunteer guidelines had been posted at boat launches but that voluntary language limits enforcement: “I hate to see it continue as purely voluntary … I think we need something with some teeth and it's something that could be enforceable,” she said. Lake Welfare representatives said they planned outreach in the quarterly newsletter and would monitor compliance over the summer.
Why it matters: Wake-boat activity can affect shoreline erosion, submerged vegetation and safety for other lake users. Several Wisconsin communities have moved from voluntary guidance to restrictions or bans, and Delafield councilors said they want to consider options but prefer starting with education and committee-led outreach.
Committee work and next steps
Lake Welfare will watch lake activity through the summer and convene community outreach at the Lake Awareness meeting scheduled for early September. Councilors suggested the committee review examples from other communities and consult with Rep. Dukau and other stakeholders before recommending whether to propose a municipal code change. The committee reported 52 Wisconsin communities have enacted restrictions or bans on wake boats; the council did not adopt any ordinance at the June 16 meeting.
