Delafield approves Hillside crosswalk project after resident testimony on safety

Delafield — The Common Council voted June 16 to add a reconfigured, push-button-activated flashing crosswalk at Hillside to the 2025 street improvement program, following resident testimony about near-misses and poor visibility at the existing crossing.
Linda Davis, a resident of Hillside Senior Living Apartments at 3280 Hillside Drive, told the council many older residents use the crosswalk and face difficulty crossing: “The current crosswalk is very difficult to see … and at night, it's virtually impossible to see. A new crosswalk with a light would make this dangerous area safe,” she said.
Public works staff and Alderman Wilkin reported that initial budget authorization for a flashing signal was $10,000 but traffic staff recommended a broader reconfiguration and relocation of the crossing. After contractor quotes and scope revisions, the proposed change order to add the Hillside Crosswalk to the Wolf Paving contract totaled an additional $27,540.50.
Why it matters: Council members said the crosswalk serves residents, customers of nearby businesses and hotel guests; improving visibility and adding an activated signal aim to reduce pedestrian risk.
Council action
Alderman Wilkin moved to add the Hillside Crosswalk project to the 2025 street improvement program contract with Wolf Paving at an additional cost of $27,540.50. The motion passed on a voice vote.
Implementation and budget context
Public Works staff noted that when the street improvement program was approved in March, the program remained under budget by roughly $84,000; adding this change order would keep the program under budget by about $57,000 after the $27,540.50 increase. Councilors asked staff to proceed with contracting and installation scheduling.
Next steps
Staff will coordinate the change order with Wolf Paving, finalize design and schedule construction. Residents and councilors said they expect the crosswalk to improve safety for Hillside Senior Living residents and other pedestrians.
