County adopts countywide vehicle-use policy for departments outside sheriff’s office

The Richland County Board on June 10 approved a countywide vehicle-use policy intended to govern departments that operate county-owned vehicles, excluding the sheriff’s department which retains its own policy.
Supervisor Severson moved and Supervisor Cooley seconded the resolution from the Public Works Standing Committee. County staff said the policy was developed at the committee’s request with input from Public Works staff and the county attorney and has been approved by both Public Works and Executive committees.
The policy was described as applying to departments other than the sheriff’s office. No substantive amendments or recorded opposition were raised during the brief discussion and the resolution passed by voice vote.
Staff indicated departments with vehicles will now be covered by the countywide policy, and that the sheriff’s department policy remains separate.
