The Bloomington Board of Park Commissioners on Thursday approved an alcohol permit to allow beer sales at the Lotus in the Park event on Sept. 27 at Waldron Hill/Buskirk Park.
Sean (last name not provided), parks staff, described the request from the Lotus Entertainment Arts Foundation and staff recommendations. He said the beer garden would be restricted to beer and wine only, must be contained within an enclosed area shown on the event map, and must use security and ID checks to prevent alcohol from leaving the area. "A beer garden would not only provide an inviting social atmosphere, but also serve as a gathering place that strengthens connections between artists, audiences, and sponsors," the staff impact statement said.
As part of the permit, parks will receive 10 percent of gross beer sales. Staff said the post-event reporting is currently handled on an honor system similar to other Switchyard events, with organizers required to report gross receipts to the city after the event. The board discussed enforcement and ID-check procedures; staff said wristbands and hired security are typical measures.
A commissioner moved to approve the alcohol permit; another seconded the motion. The board approved the permit by voice vote.
