Marlington board adopts minutes, financial reports, appropriations and summer pay rates

The Marlington Local School District Board of Education on Thursday approved a slate of routine fiscal items: minutes from May meetings, financial reports for the period ending May 31, 2025, final appropriations for fiscal year 2025, initial appropriations for fiscal year 2026, and the district’s summer pay rates.

The district treasurer reported end-of-May fund balances, saying the district finished May with a total cash balance of $12,460,141.31; the treasurer reported a general-fund cash balance of $6,592,644.25 and a permanent-improvement fund balance of $1,050,416.44. The capital-projects fund balance was $3,568,427.26, and after accounting for purchase orders for summer projects (including the high-school roof), the treasurer said the available capital-projects balance was about $518,796.21.

The board approved a $122,000 additional appropriation in the food-service fund to cover higher-than-expected food costs for the year. The board also approved the fiscal-year-2026 permanent appropriations package after staff increased some line items to reflect updated building-level budget requests and carryover expectations.

Board members approved the summer pay schedule (covering positions such as secretary, custodian and computer-tech support) and a more limited set of summer staffing than in prior years as the district has trimmed programming for fiscal reasons.

All votes on these fiscal and procedural items passed by roll call with the five board members present voting in favor. The treasurer noted that 43 scholarship checks for the Folk Scholarship appeared in that check run; those awards were paid from the scholarship fund.
